Blueberries 2024
HELLO AGAIN. THE WEATHER HAS BEEN GOOD THIS SPRING WITH LITTLE FROST AND NO REALLY COLD WEATHER. THE PLANTS ARE LOADED WITH BLOOM AND BEE ACTIVITY HAS BEEN EXCELLENT. ALL THE BUSHES HAVE BEEN PRUNED, MULCHED AND WINTER DAMAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED. IT LOOKS LIKE A BUMPER CROP OF BLUEBERRIES AGAIN THIS YEAR.
WE WILL POST AN OPENING DATE LATER AS THE BERRIES RIPEN.
Hours of operation: Monday thru Thursday 8:00 am till 12:00 pm. Friday and Saturday 8:00 am till 6:00 pm. We start picking at 8:00 am and pick till the berries are all so come early.
As well as selling Christmas Trees, Ratliff Tree Farm also has a Pick-Your-Own Blueberry Farm. We have over 900 plants that have the biggest and the best-tasting blueberries in the Shenandoah Valley. Blueberries are only $4.00 a pound. We also have a limited amount of already picked berries that we pick daily. They are $5.00 a pint. Like us and share us on Facebook.
We provide you with picking buckets for picking the blueberries, but containers should be brought to take the blueberries home in.
As there are many varieties of blueberries that ripen at different times, we chose ones that ripen in July because they are sweeter and bigger then because of the hotter weather. Our irrigation system provides plenty of water to the plants so the berries can obtain their large size. We have built a new blueberry stand for your convenience and added additional parking. Will keep you posted on Facebook with our latest information. Hope to see you soon. The Ratliff family.

- Once picked, don't place the berries, still warm from the sun, in a closed bag or container. Leave the container open so moisture doesn't form in the container.
- Don't wash berries until just before using, to prevent berries from becoming mushy.
- CHILL BERRIES SOON after picking to increase shelf life. Store your fresh blueberries in the refrigerator as soon as you get them home, without washing them, in a covered bowl or storage container. If refrigerated, fresh-picked blueberries will keep 10 to 14 days.
- Freeze berries in freezer containers or zip-lock bags without washing to keep the skins from toughening. Place berries one layer deep. Freeze, then pour the frozen berries into freezer containers. Because unwashed blueberries freeze individually, they can be easily poured from containers in desired amounts. Remember both frozen and fresh berries should be rinsed and drained just before serving. Just before using, wash the berries in cold water.
- Berries will continue to ripen several days after picking.
